International Day of Light
Ever used a laser pointer, a camera or the LCD touchscreen on your smartphone? These conveniences are products of light-based technologies and reach much further than just that. In fact, it is everywhere. Light is a cross-cutting discipline that has revolutionized many of the facets of modern day life from medicine to communications and even linking cultural, economic and political aspects of global society. It is the solution to many problems faced today.
The International Year of Light was a consequential initiative by UNESCO in 2015 where the influence of light in our everyday lives was made the focus with many activities and events arranged all over the world to raise global awareness of these technologies to promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges. The International Day of Light happening every May 16th from 2018 is a continuation of this initiative, celebrating light and its technologies in our lives.
We’re joining in on this initiative with school demonstrations and an evening event where we will be talking about “Structuring the future with light“, a few fun demonstrations and star gazing with some yummy food. Download the programme here.
